Patrica Briggs’s ‘Soul Taken’ is the thirteenth instalment in the ‘Mercy Thompson ‘series. This is one of my favourite series for years and the female protagonist Mercy is no less than a family for me now.

The book has layers of pack dynamics, pack hierarchy and friendship with a touch of romance. This is a perfect mystery urban fantasy with some strong Villains. The author has tremendously done great and detailed work in world-building. So if you are looking for any action-filled fantasy with magical elements and a fast pace, then this will work great for you.

Soul Taken - Introduction

Part 1: Background and Characters of Soul Taken

Patrica Briggs always surprises us with the most compelling addition in the setting of the main character in every book of the series, ‘Mercy Thompson’.

It always proves to be a pleasure to witness the growth, especially in the female protagonist of this series- Mercy Thompson.

Soul Taken- Mercy Thompson

She is not your regular heroine but always has been an independent who is working as a car mechanic and is a coyote shifter.

She is the one who manages to pound our hearts with her every move. Nobody can underestimate her as we have seen how she outsmarts her enemies.

So overall she is a benevolent, savvy, strong headed and smart female lead.

Apart from this, she has inherited some great powers from her father which makes her different.

On top of that the most precious quality she owns- is loyalty. There were so many instances in the book that showcased how loyal she is to the one whom she loves especially related to packing and Adam.

Soul Taken - Adam

Adam, the love he has for Mercy has been beautifully shown and the way he convinced his wolf to take care of her by not overpowering her is awestruck in my mind.

Seeing them together is always a treat to watch. And this instalment served as their standalone book.

Except for them the most famous character of this series is Wulfe, always been an enigma and is no different in this series and has been shown as missing in this instalment due to the plot demand.

He seemed to have an unhealthy obsession with Mercy.

Another interesting character that we get to see in this instalment is Sherwood.

Although the author hadn’t revealed much about him, we got a few details about him.

I am suspicious that maybe Bran has sent him to be a trustworthy part of Adam’s and Mercy’s pack.

But there is still a lot to figure out about him and I expected a little more about him from the author.

Part 2: The Most Exciting Plot of Soul Taken

“By sacrificing you, I finish my task,” the soul taker said.

“I see,” I said, my mouth dry.

The main storyline of the thirteenth instalment, ‘Soul Taken’ ensued within four days of October, just before Halloween.
A vampire with uncommon access to multiple sources of magical elements whose name is Wulfe had been stalking the female protagonist- Mercy Thompson harmlessly for months and has now gone missing.

The blame for his missing came directly on Tricities Pack and the mistress of the local Vampire Seethe called Mercy and the pack.

Soul Taken - Exciting plot

She told them that it is now their responsibility to find out about Wulfe and if they fail to bring him back then the peace treaty between them will be broken.

After listening to that, Mercy and the pack had no choice except to look for Wulfe. But little did they know that it was just the start of their suffering.

The more they tried to investigate, the more weird information they found. It was then they got to know that it wasn’t only Wulfy but there were so many vampires and white witches that went missing.

Meanwhile, during this time, Mercy got to see strange dreams where she used to see Wulfy and the soul taker coming behind her.

Deep inside her heart, she knew that she had less time. Her life was in danger and she was scared as they were surely coming after her.

So to survive she realized that she needed to be one step ahead of them along with Adam.

That’s when we get to see that she and Adam had a great time.

So how will they find out about Wulfe or things will get worse between them and the Vampires?

Part 3: Ending to the Soul Taken – You Can Guess

After constantly greeting dreams of soul takers, Mercy knew that she had less time as they were coming after her.

At this time she showed her magical powers in the most subtle ways and she managed to handle the threat with Adam together.

Although many obstacles came her way, she was determined to deal with them. Adam equally supported her but do you think Wulfe died?

Or is it his smart plan to do things after foreshadowing himself?

How will Mercy save herself along with the peace treaty with the Vampires?

Part 4: Conclusion

Sometimes books spellbound us in a very different way and this book, “Soul Taken” is one of the greatest examples of that.

This instalment of the series has a compelling storyline and a very solid plot.

The main couple- Mercy and Adam shared great chemistry and understanding.

This urban fantasy proved to be a fantastic addition to the series. Overall it is a delightful action-packed mystery full of humour and suspense and I can’t wait to get my hands on the next instalment of this series.

So if you are a fan of paranormal urban fantasy with great world-building then start this series, ‘Mercy Thompson’.
