Part 1: Storyline of To The King and the Paladin

The Queen gave birth to just one daughter, her name was Calliope. In the bid to have a male heir, he contracted a mistress of noble birth. She was ruthless and heartless, hungry for power and even though she had what Calliope’s mother never had, she envied her for being the Queen instead of herself. This mistress gave birth to three children, a boy, and two daughters. She began to plot how she could overthrow Calliope’s mother and become the Queen of Alfensiad. She was certain that if the Queen died, the King would marry the mother of his son and heir.

She began to spread rumors about Calliope’s mother. Her target was to ruin her reputation and make her unfit for the throne. She gathered her friends and together they kept working until they were able to stage a scene where the Queen was kissed in public by a strange low-life vagabond.

Without the help of the mistress and her friends, Calliope’s mother’s reputation was ruined. The mistress kept making jest of her in the palace, giving her no breathing space. And Calliope’s mother would succumb to pressure and commit suicide by poisoning.

Calliope fled from the kingdom when she could no longer handle the situation in the palace. Both the ugly mistress and her illegitimate children – as far as Calliope was concerned – refused to give her peace.

Not to mention that her father – the king, died very mysteriously not up to a year after her mother passed. Calliope found herself in one of the neighboring kingdoms, the one farthest from Alfensiad. There, she disguised herself and made sure her face was constantly covered from the mouth to the nose. She took menial jobs and worked like an ordinary commoner. But one thing drove her to resolve, she was determined to take back her kingdom and inheritance.

It was in this unknown place that she met the illegitimate son of Duke Heilich – Ezekiel. He was a tall, handsome young man, who had been abandoned by his family due to the circumstances surrounding his birth.

He was sent away to fight for the army. The two estranged teenagers became inseparable and eventually fell in love. Calliope had changed her name in the new kingdom and the chosen name was what she gave to Ezekiel.

After many years, Calliope was able to join the army in disguise. She trained and fought until she rose to the rank of general. She decided the time had come to implement her revenge.

She went to Alfensiad with her men and killed the new king, locked up the rest of the family, and forcefully took power. She was so angry that to begin her rule, she must behead all the nobles who were in her seat while the mistress overpowered her mother.

She killed all the legitimate sons of King Heilich and ordered him to sell one of them to her, as king consult, in exchange for his life. She didn’t want any of the ones she’d killed, but she asked because she knew Ezekiel was one of his sons.

Duke Heilich sent for his illegitimate son, who was now a general himself, and asked him to go to Alfensiad so his new title could be made official. As he traveled he thought of the little girl who he’d loved and had never stopped missing.
