Manga Review: The Return of the Disaster-Class Hero

The Return of the Disaster-Class Hero is an epic and delightful tale packed with riveting adventures of slaying nail-biting monsters and clashes of godly powers. It’s the typical heroes versus dark forces, the powers emanating from the character’s capabilities, and their inner strengths. The world-building isn’t hard to comprehend or visualize because the narrative timeline is linear, and moves inside a modernized era. Even the fights, the descriptions of the scenes, and the character’s inner thoughts are laid out pretty straightforwardly to the point. You don’t need to activate your abstract reasoning or explore your deepest thoughts as the story is more focused on developing the reader’s creativity and imagination. Also, the writing structure and techniques aren’t Shakespeare-like, so good news, you’ll be safe from a headache journey.

It’s composed of a hundred or so chapters and has been already translated into one or more languages. Reading it would be like entering an online game. Colorful, lively, and full of whimsical scenes.

If you’re up to experiencing such an extraordinary read, I suggest you read more and equip yourself with tidbits of information before diving into this unnatural, fantastic, and satisfyingly creative novel.

Part 1: Main Plot of The Return of the Disaster-Class Hero

The Return of the Disaster-Class Hero - Fighting the Monster Boss

In The Return of the Disaster-Class Hero, the main plot is fixated on Lee Gun, the most powerful awakened hero and the current pride of Korea for using his power to protect the nation and its people.

His heroic image and honorable reputation should be enough to nullify his morals, but sad to say, his aim for exercising his power and letting himself be used by the government isn’t leaning on the brighter side. He’s doing it for self-absorption, fame, and expansion of his abilities.

Pretty ironic, huh? He’s an inch closer to being an anti-hero, and it’s not surprising. In terms of his background, and behavior, it’s expected.

Still, many idolize him, treating him like an equal to a saint. It’s the reason why when the government sent them to the tower of monsters for the purpose of defeating the boss monster, Lee Gun’s return was more anticipated than the results themselves.

When the other heroes came home and Lee Gun wasn’t anywhere to be found, the whole world fell into a deep slumber of grief. Not a single human expressed no sentiment with his departure.

Everyone mourned, wept, and screamed for the biggest loss they weren’t prepared to face. Beneath the heartbreak and sadness, there was an overwhelming fear and worry manifesting inside them. Because how can they survive a damning world without the solid pillar of their security?

It’s only a matter of time before the world would throw a fit of rage once they know the truth behind the unexpected demise of their celebrated hero.

The Return of the Disaster-Class Hero - Young Lee Gun

Years go by, and the legacy of Lee Gun continues to carry on. His name is uttered with respect, and his story is told countless times without a tone of dignity. The regret and consequences were profound, almost impossible to miss. The world has never been in so much chaos and disorderly ever since Lee Gun disappeared. Monsters from different realms arrive every day, and conspiracies that can spark wars are happening in every dark corner of each country.

When Lee Gun re-appeared, everyone thought all of the crises that threatens the longevity of the world will finally perish. That wasn’t the actual case because Lee Gun chose to survive all those years for the moment where he can ultimately exact his revenge upon those who framed him and betrayed him.

It was later that not all of the awakened heroes (like him) contributed to the betrayal. Only one of them sparked that movement. The rest just chose to abandon him. Either because of envy for his power, or they are just that heartless, it’s the mystery that baffled Lee Gun soon as he discovered the truth about his comrades.

His punishment towards them was brutal and heartless, the clash that follows it almost changed the rhythm of peace across the globe. Heck, it even destroyed it. But when more truth unfolded, their deception and the unity of the country leaders to take him down became the least of Lee Gun’s concerns.

Much stronger, and much deadlier were waiting for him in the dark. Will they set aside the feud for once, or will Lee Gun cooperate with the dark entity so he could double the pain he’s ready to cause them?

Part 2: Hot Chapters from The Return of the Disaster-Class Hero

Chapter 1

The Return of the Disaster-Class Hero - Premonition

Here, we have a short information as to why the world has reached such a point where military and technology can no longer terminate the threats of each country.

The chapter opens with Lee Gun, engaged in a casual conversation with one of his subordinates, and amused with the fact that the fortune teller told him it’s his last day on earth.

Knowing the full outline of his power, it’s an absurd idea that he couldn’t quite accept. His ego is too deep-rooted, such terrifying premonition meant nothing to him but empty words. Shrugging it off, Lee Gun walked away from the talk, laughing and in high spirits. Unbeknownst to him, it will be the last time he’ll ever set foot in the real world.

That was soon to be true when all of the awakened heroes came back from their mission, and Lee Gun wasn’t one of the fortunate. At the end of the chapter, twenty years after, two innocent men saw a familiar face among the crowd, eating vigorously and wearing clothes that looked to be very outdated,

It was Lee Gun.

Chapter 2

The Return of the Disaster-Class Hero - Lee Gun Fighting Monsters

Flashback to what happened inside the tower twenty years ago. After killing the final boss of the monsters, Lee Gun joined his colleague to celebrate their victory.

But one of them set him up to be trapped inside a room. While he struggled to get out, his colleagues flee away, one by one, leaving him screaming, and attracting the smell of monsters.

Because he couldn’t get out, he was forced to fight the monsters, using only what remains in his powers, and with a knife stuffed in his mouth. Together with the other hunters confined inside, he killed each of the monsters that attempted to kill him.

For years, that went on. Out of a miracle, and out of the expansion of his power, he escaped, and the tower of the monsters burned into ashes.

Part 3: Evalution and a Similar Book on Dreame

Technically speaking, the book has so much to offer. The plot, the characters, the worldbuilding, and the dialogue were all meant for one another. Nothing in the context of the story has made me cringe or made me think it wasn’t worthy of my attention.

I was engaged from the moment I read the first paragraph, and that’s a good sign, to be honest. I looked up the feedback online, and it wasn’t surprising I wasn’t the only one who got the same reaction.

But, of course, there’s no such thing as perfection, and this novel or manhwa didn’t escape that curse. There might be some themes or scenes that might strike you as disturbing, or trivial, fret not, because So before you read it, I’d suggest you leave some room for doubts.

Still, seeing it has so much potential as Solo Leveling, The Return of the Disaster Class Hero is definitely a worthy read, one that I highly recommend for everybody who wants an enjoyable, and full of adventures book. If I loved it, you should, too!

If you like this review, and hoping for another book to devour, you can definitely rely on -a slow-burn romance novel from Dreame that will change your ideologies about love, society, and life. Like The Return of the Disaster-Class Hero, it’s also filled with mysteries, thrilling adventures, and heartstopping romance.
